I received a free Utilities CD from PC Magazine, I recall, and on it was a free copy of PowerDesk, then published by On Track. I've been using PowerDesk for at least nine years. Another feature that this version had was a file encrypting and a destroying feature that seem to have been phased out by Avanquest. The interface is much pleasanter than Total Commander for me. Non-Start Screen Search window in 8.1, which as is indicated above is almost completely crippled. The Search with this does not work as fast as Total Commander, but it is way ahead of the Most of the time the program works fine in 8.1, but did use this procedure once.

Windows 8.1 has made the Task Manager even more accessible. By ending all but one of these in the Task Manager window and exiting that, the Powerdesk would work fine. If one brought up the Task Manager with Cntrl Alt Del it would show the program listed 2 or 3 times or more. This was put out by Avanquest shortly after acquiring this program and their subsequent versions seem to have gotten progressively worse.Ī hitch on Vista and Windows 7 and possibly on XP was that the program didn't open when clicked. I have a couple of old copies of Powerdesk and dug out the Powerdesk 6. It appears to me that Microsoft is de-emphasizing features that have worked well with an eye to some future rather than making the present ones work well. It seems that the updates from 8.0 to 8.1 and subsequent updates have made this worse. Got used to using the Search in the ribbon at the top of folder windows, but that has gotten progressively slower and finds nothing most of the time. The Bing based Start Screen Search is fast, but does not find anything on a removable drive. I am presently using this with Windows 8.1.
